Healing carries a name.

OURS HAS A STORY.

d’Arcy Psychiatric Care was named in honor of Darcy Ellen, a woman remembered for her strength, compassion, and unwavering love.

Her legacy reminds us that every person deserves to be seen, heard, and treated with dignity.

Her name was Darcy Ellen.

Darcy Ellen Whisel, United States Air Force, 1952 to 2000.

She was my mother.

She spoke five languages fluently. She loved to travel and was happiest somewhere she had never been before. She watched the weather the way other people watch the news. She laughed constantly, and she made everyone around her laugh, and if you met her once you did not forget her.

She also carried her own darkness, quietly, for most of her life.

She served in the Air Force. She survived a marriage she should not have had to survive. She lived with depression in an era when nobody said that word out loud, and twice it nearly took her from us. She drank for years. And then, after one significant event, she put the cap on the bottle and never took it off again.

She was sunshine to everyone else the entire time she was carrying all of that.

From the outside everything looked fine. Handled. Cheerful, even. On the inside there was isolation, sadness, anxiety, and the fear that if anyone saw the real thing they would judge her for it. Some people call that masking. Most people just call it getting through the day.

I think about her constantly, because I meet people every week who are doing exactly the same thing.

She did it without most of what I can offer a patient today. No telehealth. No evening appointment that would have let her go without anyone knowing. Very little language for any of it, and very few people asking the right questions.

She got through anyway. That is the part I want you to hold onto.

d’Arcy means fortress.

That is the part I keep coming back to. A fortress is not somewhere you go to hide. It is something that holds while everything is coming at you. That is what she was for other people, and it is what I want this practice to be for you.

Everyone who comes here gets what she deserved and mostly did not get: someone who listens, who does not flinch at the hard parts, and who treats the whole story instead of the piece that fits neatly in a chart.

If you see something of yourself in her, or something of someone you love, you are exactly who I built this for.

There is no judgment here. Not with me.

I will walk this with you, alongside you, and you do not have to do it alone.

Where Experience and Evidence Meet Empathy.
